Ripon Building
The Greater Chennai Corporation's headquarters are in the Ripon Building in Chennai, near the Central Railway Station. It was built in 1913 and named after Lord Ripon. Its style is neoclassical with Indo-Saracenic elements. Its most recognizable feature is a 132-foot clock tower with a mechanical Westminster chime. The all-white structure, made of lime mortar and brick, represents the grandeur of the colonial period. Restoration efforts have preserved its history, and a modern extension now serves administrative purposes. It is still a symbol of civic pride and historical significance, symbolizing more than a century of local governance in Chennai. Entry is prohibited, but the exterior is worth admiring.
